The Delta State Police Command is under mounting pressure following the killing of a 28-year-old suspect during an arrest operation in Effurun, as internal investigations continue into what has been described as a serious breach of operational procedure.

The incident, which has triggered widespread outrage after a viral video surfaced online, occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation by officers attached to the Area Command in Effurun.

The suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, was reportedly intercepted while allegedly attempting to send a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition. Police said the arrest operation was based on credible intelligence received from members of the public.

However, the operation turned fatal when the team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm during the encounter, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Delta State Police Command had earlier stated that the officer’s action violated Force Order 237 and established rules governing the use of firearms during arrests and operational engagements.

Speaking on the development during a television interview, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Command was deeply concerned about the incident and admitted that investigators were still struggling to establish why the officer resorted to lethal force.

He described it as one of the most difficult cases the Command has handled in recent years, stressing that internal reviews have yet to provide a clear explanation for the shooting.

The officer involved has since been taken into custody and transferred to Abuja for further interrogation as part of ongoing disciplinary and criminal investigations.

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated that it will not condone extrajudicial actions by its personnel, assuring that due process will be followed and that accountability will be enforced where necessary.

Meanwhile, the incident has continued to generate public concern, with growing calls from citizens and rights advocates for transparency in the investigation and stronger safeguards against excessive use of force by security operatives.

As investigations progress, attention remains focused on whether the outcome will address wider concerns about police conduct and operational discipline across the Country.
