A man has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command after allegedly attacking his minor daughter with a hot pressing iron on her private part as punishment for bed-wetting.
The incident occurred at Unaun new site, Upenmen, in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, where the father allegedly subjected the child to the assault, inflicting injuries that required immediate medical attention.
The suspect was swiftly arrested for investigation following the mobilisation of the Divisional Police Officer, Owo ‘A’ Division, Mr Iwatan Oluwatobi, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Police Command, CP Felix Ohagwu.
The case came to light after Chief Olanrewaju Abegunde, the Olunaun of Unaun-Owo; Mr Ajibola Omotayo, Secretary of the Owo Youth Assembly; and Hon Olasupo Olakunori, Director-General of the Opomumero Movement, intervened and alerted the State Government to the incident.
The minor was given attention at the police station before being taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, for emergency care, facilitated by the Ondo State Government. Rt Hon Doyin Adeyefa, Leader of the House, Owo Local Government; Hon Nike Agbede, Councillor for Ijebu 2 Ward 4; media practitioner Mr Maxwell Uwashokan; and welfare officers of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development were credited with ensuring the child received prompt care.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, described the act as heinous and dastardly, and reaffirmed the zero-tolerance stance of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration toward child abuse, social degradation and assault. She pledged that the father would face prosecution by the State Government.
Dr Osamaye also commended Mrs Akinrogbe Omolara, former Special Assistant to the Governor, and Ministry welfare officer Mr Bakare, for ensuring the minor received proper medical attention at the federal hospital.
She urged members of the public to promptly report all cases of child abuse to the Ministry without delay.
