The Ondo State Government has urged residents to refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing fear and panic, saying the state remains peaceful and secure despite recent false reports circulating on social media.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu janaku, the government said reports alleging kidnappings in schools and the presence of bandits within Akure metropolis were false and had been debunked by security agencies.

According to the government, the claims were thoroughly investigated and found to be unfounded following comprehensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by relevant authorities.

“The Government notes with concern the growing trend of misinformation and fake news, which pose significant threats to public safety, social harmony, and public confidence.
” The deliberate dissemination of false information not only causes unnecessary anxiety among residents but also distracts security agencies from their core responsibilities of protecting lives and property”.

Ajanaku noted that the deliberate dissemination of unverified reports creates unnecessary anxiety among residents and could divert security agencies from their primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.

The commissioner reiterated the commitment of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration to the safety and security of all residents of the state.

He commended the Nigeria Police Force, the Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies for their vigilance, professionalism, and sustained efforts in maintaining peace and security across Ondo State.

The government advised residents to rely only on information from official government channels, accredited media organisations, and verified social media platforms.

It also urged members of the public to verify the authenticity of information before sharing it and to avoid forwarding messages capable of causing public alarm without credible evidence.

Ajanaku further called on residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements, criminal activities, or any security concerns through appropriate channels.

“Security remains a collective responsibility, and the cooperation of all residents is essential to sustaining the peace, stability, and development of Ondo State,” the statement said.

The government reassured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment across the state.
