Wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has described a developed society as one with healthy population.

Mrs. Akeredolu who is the Founder of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), said this in Igbara-Oke community, the headquarters of Ifedore local government during a sensitisation and awareness programme on breast, cervical and prostate cancer to mark this year’s World Cancer Day in Ondo state.

According to her, BRECAN took it upon itself to mark the day with free screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancer, noting that, only healthy people could attend school, religious centres and, even office, hence, the need to preach early detection across the nooks and crannies of the State.

Her words: “It is important that the population is healthy, that is why we are going round to preach or wage war against all forms of cancer; because if the population is well, we can now talk about development, we want our population to be healthy and that’s why we are here”.

Justifying the essence of taking this year’s programme to Ifedore local government, the BRECAN Founder said; “Awareness of cancer is not just for city people, it’s for everyone regardless of where you may live. Everyone needs to be properly informed and properly empowered to recognise the signs of this dreaded disease, because like we always say, “early detection saves lives”.

The Ondo First Lady, hinted that BRECAN decided to include Prostate cancer awareness and screening to its programme following the increasing rate of men suffering from the disease, mostly presenting at the late stage.

“We are also educating men because we don’t even know what is going on now, people are coming down with one kind of cancer or another. Prostate cancer is troubling men; any man that cannot urinate now should go to hospital”.

She charged individuals to visit nearby health centres if there’s any unusual change in the body; affirming that it’s not a spiritual attack or death sentence. “if you detect cancer early, and get treated, you will definitely survive, because we have many people who did the right thing and they are alive today”.
