The Ondo State Government has provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the offensive odour being perceived in some parts of Akure metropolis.

Following the directive of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, a team of Professionals was constituted by the Ministry, to work with some Environmental Consultants, to investigate the possible source and nature of the odour.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the Ala river course is not the source of the offensive odour as earlier speculated. Rather, the findings suggest that the odour is purely a case of air pollution arising from the release of certain organic compounds into the atmosphere.

While efforts are ongoing to conclusively identify the specific organic compound(s), its/their characteristics and the source, the state government has recommended some precautionary measures for residents of the affected areas: Residents are advised to limit their exposure to the odour and make use of nose masks in the affected areas.

The government, therefore, urges residents in the state to remain calm and continue with their normal daily activities. They are also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities; illegal waste disposal, unusual emissions or other environmental violations to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment for appropriate action.
