The Ondo State Government has warned residents against the consumption of unapproved substances, herbal drinks, concoctions and other products not certified as safe for human consumption.

The warning followed a recent incident in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, which reportedly resulted in the loss of lives.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, in a statement issued on Thursday, urged residents to exercise utmost caution and desist from patronising or consuming substances of doubtful origin.

Ajanaku said the safety, health and wellbeing of residents remained key priorities of the present administration.

The Commissioner also issued a strong warning to sellers, producers and distributors of uncertified substances, directing them to immediately desist from the practice.

According to him, “The production, sale and distribution of unapproved substances pose serious risks to public health and may attract appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.”
Ajanaku further cautioned residents, particularly youths, against drug abuse and the unauthorised use or consumption of substances capable of causing serious health complications or death.

He advised residents to obtain medicines and other consumable products only from authorised and regulated outlets.

The Commissioner said: “Residents are advised to obtain medicines and other consumable products only from authorised and regulated outlets, and to seek professional medical advice rather than resorting to unverified remedies or substances.”

He stressed the need for citizens to exercise greater responsibility in the choice of substances they consume, warning against products whose origin, composition or safety status could not be verified.

On the Odigbo incident, Ajanaku  said, “The Government is currently investigating the Odigbo incident to establish the actual cause of the deaths.

“Relevant government agencies are working diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

He appealed to residents to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified reports about the incident.

“The  Government also appeals to residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.”

The government also commended the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Hon. Taiwo Adegboye, for his prompt response to the situation and support for efforts aimed at protecting residents.

The Commissioner reiterated the government’s warning to all residents, vendors, producers and distributors to shun drug abuse and the unauthorised production, sale, distribution or consumption of illegal and uncertified substances.

He declared: “The Government will continue to take appropriate measures, in accordance with existing laws and regulations, to protect the health and safety of citizens.”

Ajanaku further urged members of the public to report suspicious activities involving the production, sale or distribution of dangerous, illegal or unapproved substances to the appropriate authorities.

He said, “Protecting lives and promoting a safe and healthy society is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of all residents.”

The government assured residents that necessary measures were being taken to safeguard public health and prevent a recurrence of incidents linked to unsafe or uncertified substances.
