Day 5 of the BEMORE Empowered Girls Summer Bootcamp in Ibadan unfolded in a colourful and historic fashion, marked by reflection, learning, and hands-on engagement. The day’s activities reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to equipping young girls with digital competence, social awareness, and sustainable skills that will serve them beyond the camp. From morning exercise to evening team challenges, every session was designed to build both mind and character.

The day commenced as usual with morning exercise alongside the Introduction of TAEKWONDO exercise, followed by a nourishing breakfast of fruits at the dining hall. The routine not only promotes physical wellness but also sets a disciplined tone for learning. After breakfast, the girls proceeded to class with renewed energy and focus, ready to take on the day’s academic and practical engagements.

The first lecture was on Information and Communication Technology, facilitated by Mr. Bodunrin Olalekan Caleb. The session introduced the girls to another critical component of digital literacy: Microsoft Excel. Participants were taken through the usage, components, functions, and key features of the spreadsheet application. The facilitator emphasized how Excel is used in schools, offices, and businesses for data management, budgeting, and analysis. The class was interactive and inspiring, as the girls grasped how mastering Excel can give them a technological edge beyond the classroom and position them for future academic and career opportunities.

Following the ICT session, the bootcamp hosted a crucial workshop on Sexual and Gender-Based violence, SGBV, led by Temilola Tomoloju. Temilola, who is also an alumna of the BEMORE Bootcamp initiative, delivered a deeply engaging session on the meaning of SGBV, its types, the power dynamics and root causes behind it, and the legal consequences for perpetrators. She taught the girls practical ways to protect themselves and how to become first responders and support systems for victims dealing with trauma.

To drive the message home, she shared the painful story of a promising young girl from Plateau State who was raped by her own brother, and explained how such incidents often lead to long-term trauma and vulnerability to further exploitation. The story sparked serious contributions from the BEMORE girls, who spoke on how they intend to use the knowledge gained to protect girls in their schools and communities and to promote a culture of respect and safety. The session left participants more informed, vigilant, and committed to being advocates against violence.

After lunch, the afternoon session resumed with ASHDAM SOLAR Academy. The class focused on “Introduction to Renewable Energy,” where the girls learned about the value renewable energy creates for society and the environment. The facilitator explained how solar and other clean energy sources can address power challenges while creating green jobs and opportunities for young people. The theoretical class was followed by a practical team activity tagged “MARSHMALLOW.” In this exercise, each SDG group worked collaboratively to complete a task that tested creativity, planning, and teamwork.

At the end of the challenge, performance was assessed, and marks were awarded. SDG 5 emerged as the overall winner, SDG 2 came second, and SDG 1 took third place. The activity not only reinforced lessons on renewable energy but also strengthened collaboration and competitive spirit among the girls.

The entire day was described by organizers as vibrant, educative, and impactful. Appreciation was extended to all invited tutors and facilitators who shared their expertise. Special gratitude went to the matrons for their guidance, the media team for coverage, and most especially to the Chief Matron, Mrs. Kelechi Igboegwu and her team for ensuring order and care throughout the day. The Resources Manager, Miss Nonye Okafor, and every other person who contributed to the success of Day 5 were also duly acknowledged for making the activities memorable and meaningful.
