The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has called on the Ondo State Government to accelerate ongoing road projects, improve alternative routes around the Akure flyover construction and adopt proactive measures to prevent flooding across the state.

The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s monthly congress held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka, Akure.

The Congress noted the ongoing road construction efforts of the state government but expressed concern over the slow pace of work on some projects.

According to the communiqué, “Congress notes the ongoing road construction efforts of the Ondo State Government across the state, but expressed reservations over the slow pace of works on some of the projects especially Akungba-Ikare Akoko Road, Okitipupa-Igbokoda Road and Akure-Idanre Road. The Union therefore urged contractors handling the road projects to double up efforts at completing them.”

On the ongoing construction of the flyover at Oba Adesida Road in Akure, the union described the project as laudable but urged the government to make diversion routes motorable to reduce traffic congestion.

The communiqué stated, “Congress described the ongoing construction of the flyover at Oba Adesida Road in Akure as a lofty project, but urged the Ondo State Government to make alternative routes motorable to ease traffic diversion, especially clearing Arakale Road for easy and free flow of traffic in the state capital.”

The journalists also expressed concern over the incidence of flooding in parts of the state, calling on both the state and local governments to take preventive measures rather than waiting for disasters to occur.

“Congress described the pockets of flooding across the state as pathetic, calling on both the state and local governments to be more proactive in preventing flooding instead of waiting until such incidents occur before taking action,” the communiqué added.

The union commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the ongoing dualisation of the Ilesa-Akure-Owo-Benin Road, reconstruction of the Akure-Ado Ekiti Road and rehabilitation of the Akure-Ondo-Ore Road.

However, it expressed deep concern over the deplorable condition of federal roads linking Ondo North, particularly in the Akoko axis, and urged federal lawmakers and political appointees from the area to facilitate the rehabilitation of the Ikare-Ogbagi-Irun-Akoko-Ado Ekiti Road and the Owo-Ipele-Isua Akoko-Kabba Road.

The Congress also applauded the leadership of the Ondo State NUJ under Prince Leke Adegbite for protecting the welfare of members and the ongoing beautification of the Press Centre.

It further commended the council for supporting programmes organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), including children’s parties and sporting activities.

The union also praised the improvements at the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) Media Group and appealed to the state government to ensure the television station is carried on cable networks to enhance service delivery and improve career prospects for its workforce.

The Congress observed a minute’s silence in honour of veteran journalist, Sir Ademola Adetula, a former NUJ state officer and immediate past Managing Director of The Hope Newspapers, describing him as one of the finest journalists produced by Ondo State and praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his family.
