The Ondo State Government has thrown its weight behind the nationwide #UniteAgainstTerror campaign, calling on Nigerians to set aside political, ethnic, and religious differences and unite against terrorism and other violent crimes threatening the country’s peace and stability.
The government made its position known in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku, stressing the need for collective action in tackling insecurity across the nation.
According to the him, the campaign gained momentum following the recent conviction and sentencing of individuals linked to the June 2022 Owo church massacre, an attack that claimed several innocent lives and left many families and communities devastated.
The government described the judicial outcome as a significant step toward justice, but noted that defeating terrorism requires sustained vigilance and active public participation.
The information commissioner affirmed that the initiative was designed to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve public awareness, and deny criminal elements safe havens within communities.
While speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had said the moment calls for Nigerians to speak with one voice against terrorism, emphasising that national security should rise above partisan interests.
“This is a defining moment for Nigerians to come together with one voice against terrorism. When we see something, we must say something.” The statement quotes the governor.
ODSG therefore, urged citizens to promptly report suspicious movements and security concerns to relevant authorities.
The state government also commended the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies for their dedication, courage, and sacrifices in protecting lives and safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.
“Ondo State Government therefore calls on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community associations, youth groups, civil society organizations, media practitioners, and all well-meaning Nigerians to embrace the #UniteAgainstTerror campaign as a patriotic movement aimed at strengthening intelligence gathering, promoting public awareness, and denying criminal elements the space to operate within our communities”, says Ajanaku.
Reaffirming the state’s government commitment to supporting lawful measures aimed at enhancing national security, the government urged citizens to remain vigilant, responsible, and actively involved in efforts to safeguard the country.
“Together, united in purpose and action, we can defeat terrorism and build a safer and more secure nation for present and future generations,” he added.
