The Delta State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the proposed establishment of state police, with all 23 lawmakers present voting in favour of the constitutional amendment.
The resolution was reached during plenary on Tuesday as the House considered the proposed Sixth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, which seeks to pave the way for decentralised policing in Nigeria.
The Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor, presided over the session, while the House Leader led the debate on the proposal.
Speaking after the vote, Guwor described the decision as an important step towards establishing a policing structure that could respond more effectively to security challenges within local communities.
“For Delta State, this reform holds great promise for protecting lives and property, sustaining peace and creating a safer environment for investment and development,” the Speaker said.
He added that the decision aligned with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
Following the approval, Guwor directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to the National Assembly for further action.
