The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ondo State Chapter, has applauded the Ondo State Government for resuscitating road signs and installing new traffic lights across Akure, the state capital.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued after the Institute’s December 2025 monthly meeting, jointly signed by the Chairman of the Chapter, Funmilayo Ikueduranni, and Secretary, Sunday Olusegun Omosule.
According to the Chapter, the intervention mirrors practices in modern, well-planned cities globally, noting that functional traffic management systems are central to urban development, orderliness, and adherence to international standards.
The NIPR stressed that the social value of the project is immense, as properly functioning traffic lights enhance the safety of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. It said the initiative will help reduce road accidents, promote disciplined driving culture, and improve the general well-being of residents and visitors within the metropolis.
On the economic front, the Institute described the project as a strategic investment in mobility and productivity.
It said efficient traffic control reduces travel time, boosts commercial activities, moderates fuel consumption, and strengthens the environment for business and security operations.
The group added that the government’s effort aligns with global infrastructural and economic development priorities as captured in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 9.
However, while lauding the initiative, the Chapter urged the State Government to complement the infrastructural upgrade with extensive public enlightenment campaigns.
It advised that the Ministries of Transportation, Information, and Works, alongside the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), should lead sustained sensitisation on the proper use of traffic lights and road regulations, warning that lack of awareness could undermine the project’s impact.
The NIPR further reaffirmed its readiness to partner with Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration in driving awareness efforts that will promote public compliance and ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
