Ondo First Lady confesses passion for young minds, hosts NYSC Red Cross Members

..emphasises practicability of academic qualifications

The need for Nigerian Graduates to practicalise the Academic qualifications they acquired at higher institutions, starting from youth service year, has been emphasised.

Wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, made the above assertion while playing host to members of the National Youths Service Corps’ Red Cross group, from Akure North, at the Rotunda hall of the government house on Wednesday.

Addressing the young minds, the Ondo First Lady who took her time to know the activities of the Corps members, and having discovered that some were posted to a place of assignment not related to their areas of study, described such as one of the problems of educational system in Nigeria.

She said: “One of the problems with educational system is that we don’t apply the knowledge and skills we acquired in higher institutions”.

Appreciating the NYSC Red Cross  members for following her programmes on social media platforms, she disclosed that her passion for the young ones formed the reason she made herself accessible and reachable online.

She discountenanced the belief in some quarters that she was biased for only girl child, noting that her Tennis initiative had groomed and produced boys Champions who had participated in national competitions.

“I’m very little bit biased for women and girls, but that is not to say that I don’t love you boys, I do”, she said.

According to her, the initiative, known as Ondo Summer Tennis Clinic, which had birthed Arabirin Junior Tennis Club, was an extension of her family game right from Ibadan.

“I thought it fit to bring it along to Ondo State and interestingly, the thing has really blossomed and this year we are extending it to other senatorial districts, starting with South. I just want to probably disabuse the minds of some people that accuse Arabirin of being biased for girls”.

Reacting to the condolence statement made by the Corps members over the Owo June attack, Mrs Akeredolu stressed the need for young Nigerians to question the security architecture of the country, noting that the heinous attack left so many questions unanswered, being a deliberate act.

She, therefore, appreciated the Red Cross Corps members for the motherhood Artwork they presented her, and assured them of partnership in contributing to the socioeconomic development of Nigeria.

“I like to mingle with young people, reason I’m very much accessible on social media platforms.  When it comes to matters that concern children and youths, I’m all there , that’s why I’m excited that you thought it fit to come and be with me this afternoon “, she added.

Earlier, the President of the group, Mr. Obiaghanwa Chigozie, who presented her an Artwork demonstrating motherhood, commended her for her impactful initiatives to support the Governor.

According to him, the Artwork was to showcase her love for the people of Ondo State, especially women and girls who she’d been attending to through her Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria and the BeMore Empowered Foundation 4girlsnaija and many other empowerment programmes.

He used the medium to acquaint the First Lady with community services the group had rendered.
