The jilted lover who killed nine members of his ex-girlfriend’s family in Okitipupa area of Ondo state last week has been arrested.
The culprit, Deji Adenuga, a palm wine tapper, popularly known as, “Davar Oluodo,” who was paraded today at the headquarters of Ondo State Police Command confessed to have set the family house ablaze with the motive to kill only Titi Sanusi, his girlfriend and her elder sister.
The state Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie who paraded the culprit before newsmen revealed that Adenuga was nabbed at Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State on Monday where he went to hide after committing the heinous crime.
It would be recalled that on April 23 at Igbodigho community in Okitipupa, the culprit set the family house ablaze with five members reportedly dead immediately while three were later declared dead two days after in the hospital.
Fortunately, he didn’t meet his target as Titi survived the attack but was said to be in a critical condition in an undisclosed hospital.
Speaking to newsmen, Adenuga explained that Titi jilted him and he consequently set the family house ablaze in the middle of the night.
He however alleged Titi’s elder sister, Jumoke of using her to defraud him.
“I’ve been the one taking care of Titi and her aunt’s family.
“My girlfriend (Titi) went to abort the four months old pregnancy she had for me after I advised her not to. She also ran away with my N55,000.
“Titi’s aunt (Jumoke) always made sure Titi and I had quarrel which she used in extorting money from me. She will advise her sister to leave, and when I go pleading, she will use the avenue to collect money and food items from me.
“She did it again this time and threatened that I cannot do anything as an ex-convict. It was her threat that made me to carry out my action.
“I had wanted to kill only Titi and her sister, Jumoke. I never knew other members of the family were in the room.
Meanwhile, Adenuga was said to be an ex-convict who participated in the 2012 olokuta jailbreak where he was remanded for killing his first wife.
He was said to have been granted prerogative of mercy in 2015 after he was caught months after fleeing the prison when a jailbreak occurred.
CP Adie who described the incident as unfortunate, assured that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law.
The Commissioner of Police said:
”Recall that on 23/04/2019, at about 0200hrs, one Deji Adenuga ‘A.k.A Oluodo’, allegedly set a house ablaze where a family of nine was asleep. His grouse was that one of the family members Titi Sanumi, his former girl friend jilted him after investing so much on her.
” Eight of the victims of the arson who were mostly children were later confirmed dead, while the only remaining victim who happens to be the girl friend of the suspect is still in a critical condition in the Hospital.
“However, after intense manhunt, the suspect was arrested on 28/04/2019 in Ijebu Ode where he absconded to after committing the offence. It is unfortunate to note that the same suspect is notorious for committing heinous crime especially murder as he had earlier killed his former wife named Abiye, sometime in year 2000, which led to his being remanded in Olokuta Prison.
” He however, escaped with other inmates during jail break in 2013. The earlier murder case is also going to be looked into with a view to having him face the full weight of the law.”
