
The just concluded national delegates conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists held in Abeokuta has left one person dead as a result of an armed robbery attack while returning to their destination on Thursday night.
The vice chairman of the Ebonyi state council of the union, Mr Sam Nweke was reported to have met his untimely death during the attack.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary, NUJ Shuaibu Usman Leman
the union commiserated with the family of the deceased while describing the incident as unfortunate.
“It is with shock but with total submission to the will of God Almighty that the Nigeria Union of Journalists, National Secretariat received the report of the tragic and unfortunate death of the Vice Chairman of NUJ, Ebonyi State Council, Comrade (Sir) Sam Nweke.
“Nweke died yesterday as a result of an armed robbery attack while traveling back to Abakaliki after the just concluded 6th triennial delegates conference of NUJ at Abeokuta, Ogun state on 5th October, 2018.
“We reliably gathered from Zone C Secretariat of the Union, that Nweke was hit by another vehicle during an ensuing melee after armed robbers ordered him to lie down during robbery operations. The incident took place around Nkalagu axis of Ishielu local government area, along Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway, around 11pm on Thursday.
“We mourn the death of our Comrade and extend our profound condolences to the Ebonyi NUJ and the family of the deceased”. The statement read.
The Zone C of the union has therefore declared one week mourning for the deceased.
