Journalists have been urged to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) not only effectively but also responsibly, as the technology continues to reshape the media landscape.
The Executive Director of Safer-Media Initiative, Mr. Peter Iorter, gave the charge during a virtual conference with journalists themed “AI Tools for Journalists: Effective, Responsible, and Safe Use.”
According to him, the world is increasingly driven by technology, making it imperative for journalists to embrace emerging innovations to remain relevant.
He highlighted the growing intersection between AI and journalism, particularly in areas such as investigative reporting, fact-checking, and the optimisation of photos and videos.
Iorter encouraged media professionals to leverage AI tools to work deeper, faster, and smarter, while maintaining ethical standards.
He also allayed fears that AI could replace journalists, noting that the technology is more likely to strengthen journalistic integrity rather than undermine it.
He, however, cautioned that journalists who fail to keep pace with technological advancements and utilise the associated innovations to enhance their professional performance risk being left behind.
In her presentation titled “Understanding AI,” the founder of GenAI, Mrs. Titilope Fadare, described Artificial Intelligence as a supportive tool designed to assist with idea generation and boost productivity, rather than replace human creativity.
