Residents of Elemuletu Community in Akure, the Ondo State capital, have been thrown into distress following a devastating rainstorm that accompanied the first rainfall of February, destroying several houses and leaving many people homeless.
An elderly resident, Pastor Mayegun, said the heavy downpour, which lasted for about three hours on Tuesday, ripped off the roof of a building along Elemuletu Street, off Ijoka Road. According to him, the wind carried the roof across the street, where it caused further damage to other buildings.
He added that the storm also destroyed electricity cables and poles, worsening the situation in the community.
As a result, many residents were left without shelter, with their belongings exposed to the rain, while some reportedly sought refuge in an unfinished building.
The affected residents have appealed to the government and well-meaning individuals for urgent intervention and assistance to help them rebuild and get proper roofing over their heads.
