A two-storey building under construction collapsed today, Tuesday, around Adegbola area on Oyemekun Road in Akure, Ondo State capital , leaving many site workers with varying degrees of injuries.
Eyewitnesses said workers were on site carrying out works on the building site when it suddenly gave way at about 3.30pm.
Reports and videos from the scene showed sympathisers helping out with the rescue of those trapped beneath the rubbles. As at the time of filing this report, it was unclear if there were fatalities.
The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Sunday Olajide who addressed the media at the scene, said an investigation will be launched to uncover both the immediate and long-term causes of the incident.
Olajide also issued a stern warning to developers in the state about the use of substandard building materials, urging them to prioritize the safety of residents.
He called on developers to always secure the necessary permits and approvals before commencing construction projects.
In the meantime, the Ondo State Government has sealed off the construction site and vowed to take further action based on the outcome of the investigation.
