..urges Empowerment, Not Pity, for Persons With Disabilities

The Board Chairman of the Ondo State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disability, Princess Folasade Arise, has called for a collective commitment to building a more inclusive society where Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) can thrive without discrimination.

Arise made the call in commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), themed “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”

In her address, she expressed deep appreciation to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for what she described as unwavering support and dedication to the welfare of PWDs across the country.

She also commended the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the state’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, for their efforts in promoting the welfare and inclusion of PWDs through various initiatives and interventions.
“We are grateful for their love and support,” she said.

Highlighting this year’s theme, Arise emphasised that disability should not be viewed as a disease but as part of human diversity. She stressed that PWDs are defined not by their limitations but by their abilities and contributions to society.

“Disability is not inability. With equal opportunities and accessibility, PWDs are capable of achieving greatness,” she stated.
She added that inclusive environments benefit everyone and urged the public to focus on empowerment rather than pity.

Arise noted that many persons with disabilities still face stigma, marginalization, and exclusion, insisting that deliberate actions must be taken to reverse such trends. She called for improved accessibility in physical and digital spaces, continuous public education to challenge stereotypes, and strong support for inclusive policies that guarantee equal opportunities.

“The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a reminder that disability is not a medical condition but a natural part of human diversity,” she said. “Let us work towards a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of their abilities.”

She ended with a message of hope and reassurance:
“You are not alone, and you are not defined by your disability.”
