The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area, Hon. Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely for alleged gross misconduct.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, followed a resolution passed by the Owo Local Government Legislative Council during its sitting in Owo, under the leadership of the House Leader, Hon. Doyin Adebayo.

A statement signed by a two-thirds majority of the 11 councillors stated that the action was taken to uphold accountability and ensure good governance within the council.

According to the resolution, Hon. Omolayo was accused of financial improprieties, violation of statutory budget and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) regulations, disrespect to traditional rulers, and general misconduct.

“These allegations are serious and require a thorough investigation,” the councillors said, adding that the process would be conducted in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner.

Following the suspension, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Hamed Ibrahim, has been directed to assume office as Acting Chairman of the Local Government Area.

The Council further instructed the Head of Local Government Administration to make all necessary changes to bank signatories in recognition of Hon. Ibrahim’s new role and to ensure that all council properties in the possession of Hon. Omolayo are handed over accordingly.

Reaffirming its commitment to good governance, the Legislative Council urged residents of Owo Local Government Area to remain calm as the investigation proceeds.

“The Council remains dedicated to serving the people of Owo with integrity, transparency, and accountability,” the statement concluded.
