PRESS STATEMENT

Today, the BEMORE Empowered Girls Foundation proudly joins the global community in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child, a day set aside to recognize the rights of girls and to amplify their voices as leaders and change-makers.

This year’s theme, “The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,” resonates deeply with our mission at BEMORE. Around the world, girls are stepping up to confront today’s challenges, from climate change to health inequities, from gender-based violence to digital exclusion. Nigerian girls are no exception. They are showing courage, resilience, and leadership in transforming their communities.

At BEMORE, we believe in equipping girls not only with knowledge but with the confidence and tools to lead change. Since inception, we have empowered thousands of young Nigerian girls with skills in ICT, renewable energy (solar technology), and life-enhancing competencies, preparing them to thrive in the digital economy while also championing social good.

A shining example of this leadership was recently demonstrated by BEMORE girls who organized a breast cancer awareness outreach at Ikenegbu Girls Secondary School, Owerri, Imo State, on October 10, 2025.

At the frontline of health advocacy, these girls educated their peers on early detection, dispelled myths about breast cancer, and inspired collective responsibility for healthier communities. Their initiative reflects the essence of this year’s global theme, girls leading change even in the face of health crises that continue to affect women and girls disproportionately.

As the world marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, BEMORE reaffirms its commitment to creating safe spaces, amplifying girls’ voices, and investing in their leadership. We see every BEMORE girl not as a passive recipient of help but as a leader-in-training, capable of addressing Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, from bridging the gender digital divide to advancing health equity and climate resilience.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, we call on governments, development partners, the private sector, and civil society to invest more in girls, listen to their voices, and recognize their agency. When we empower girls, we are not just shaping their futures, we are shaping a better, more just, and more sustainable world for everyone.

Girls aren’t waiting for a better world, they are building it. BEMORE stands proudly with them.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
