The Nigerian Army has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, the Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion, who died from severe burns sustained during a domestic dispute with his wife at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State.
According to a statement issued by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Akwa Ibom State, Captain Lawal Muhammad, the incident occurred on 22 September 2025 following a heated argument between the couple, reportedly triggered by a family crisis.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation took a fatal turn when Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna allegedly set ablaze household properties, trapping her husband in the resulting inferno.
Lieutenant Haruna was immediately stabilized at the Battalion Medical Facility and later evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognizing the imperative of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect within families,” the statement read.
The Army extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of the late officer, describing his death as a painful loss to the military community.
Captain Muhammad added that a military police investigation is ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
