The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, has dismissed as false and malicious allegations that its officers bribed members of the State House of Assembly.
The claims, which trended online, were made by one Ebidumi Julius, popularly known as “General Adon Amotekun”.
Julius, who identified himself as a former Niger Delta militant from Ilaje and paraded in an Amotekun uniform, accused the Assembly of receiving money from the Corps’ personnel.
Addressing journalists in Akure on Wednesday, the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Jimoh Adeniken, said the allegations were fabricated by a disgruntled officer currently undergoing disciplinary trial.
“The House of Assembly only invited senior officers of the Corps on an official visit, during which they offered advice and stern warnings to enhance our performance,” Adeniken clarified.
He stressed that appointments within the Corps are strictly based on merit, laid-down procedures, and state regulations.
Adeniken revealed that the officer behind the allegations is facing five disciplinary charges, including suspected involvement in murder, absconding from duty, gross negligence, drug abuse, and conduct likely to tarnish the Corps’ image.
“It is regrettable that while this process is ongoing, the officer has resorted to blackmail, falsehood, and mischief in an attempt to distract the Corps,” he said.
The PRO further explained that Amotekun’s operational structure differs from that of the civil service. Many operatives, he said, are recruited based on community credibility and intelligence, with some over the age of 60. He also dismissed claims of poor welfare, noting that all operatives are covered by medical insurance and hazard allowances.
Describing the viral video carrying the allegations as “sensational and anti-security,” Adeniken urged the public to ignore it.
“The Ondo Amotekun remains a professional and disciplined institution guided by due process. We will not be distracted by propaganda aimed at destabilising our morale and cohesion,” he reaffirmed, stressing the Corps’ commitment to transparency and professionalism in safeguarding lives and property across the state.
