The Ondo State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its fight against crime with the recovery of a stolen Toyota Camry and the arrest of a suspected member of a car theft syndicate in Owo.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, on Thursday.
According to the statement, the case was first reported on July 18, 2025, when one Madam Akomolafe Bolanle of Osi area, Akure, complained that unknown persons broke into her apartment, stole the key to her unregistered 2010 Toyota Camry (golden colour), and drove away with the car alongside other valuables.
After weeks of investigation and intelligence-led policing, operatives of the Command Surveillance Team traced the vehicle to Owo on September 7, 2025. The car had been repainted blue in an attempt to conceal its identity and was found inside the apartment of one Fagbote Micheal Olamilekan.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to buying the car for ₦4 million from one Adewumi, now at large, even though the rightful owner had earlier purchased it for ₦10 million in December 2024. Further investigation also revealed that the suspect conspired with a painter, currently on the run, who repainted the vehicle to frustrate identification.
The Commissioner of Police warned automotive artisans such as painters, panel beaters, rewire technicians, and mechanics to always verify vehicle ownership before carrying out major work, stressing that anyone found aiding car theft would be treated as an accomplice.
Lawal commended the operatives for their professionalism and resilience, while also appreciating the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his support in boosting security operations in the state.
He assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle the entire syndicate. The Command, he added, remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while urging the public to continue providing timely information to aid security agencies.
