Akure, Nigeria – June 27, 2025

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has commended the National Assembly for the timely passage of the bill establishing the Federal University of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State. The union also raised concerns over the increasing number of out-of-school children roaming the streets of the state.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of its monthly congress held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure. The session, presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, had members from various chapels in attendance.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack, the union lauded the National Executive Council of NUJ led by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for the successful celebration of the union’s 70th anniversary.

The Congress reaffirmed that the NUJ remains one of Nigeria’s oldest and most vibrant unions and urged members to remain committed to the ethics of the journalism profession, especially truthfulness and national development through responsible reportage.

On the Federal University of ICT, the union expressed optimism that the institution, when operational, would advance technological education in the region. It, therefore, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to swiftly sign the bill into law to enable the university’s immediate take-off.

Expressing concern over social issues, the union noted the increasing number of out-of-school children, particularly those displaced from northern Nigeria and now seen on the streets of Ondo State begging for alms. It called on both the state and federal governments to urgently implement a reintegration plan to absorb the children into the formal education system, cautioning that their continued neglect poses a future threat to societal stability.

The Congress also deliberated on matters affecting the welfare of journalists, political developments, economic challenges, security, agriculture, and environmental concerns.
