In light of the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, the Federal Government has initiated emergency plans to evacuate Nigerian citizens currently residing in both countries. This action comes after a series of airstrikes launched by Israel on over 100 strategic targets in Iran, including military and nuclear facilities. The offensive, which began on Friday, reportedly resulted in the deaths of high-ranking Iranian military personnel and provoked swift retaliatory attacks by Iran. The ensuing violence has led to numerous casualties among both civilians and military personnel.

On Tuesday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that arrangements are being finalised to evacuate Nigerians caught in the escalating conflict. A statement from ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed the development, citing the urgent need to safeguard Nigerian nationals amid the growing insecurity in the region.

“In view of the worsening crisis between Israel and Iran, the Federal Government is putting measures in place to evacuate stranded Nigerians from both nations,” the statement read.

Nigerians in the affected areas have been advised to observe local security measures and immediately reach out to the nearest Nigerian diplomatic missions for registration and further instructions.

“All Nigerians currently in Israel and Iran are strongly urged to comply with security guidelines and make contact with our embassies for assistance,” the ministry emphasized.

The government also praised the efforts of its diplomatic teams in Tel Aviv and Tehran for their proactive engagement with the Nigerian communities during this period of heightened tension.

“The dedication and swift response of our Missions in both Israel and Iran are highly commendable,” the ministry noted. “The safety and well-being of Nigerians, whether at home or abroad, remain a top priority for the Federal Government.”

Additionally, Nigeria renewed its appeal for an immediate halt to the violence and encouraged all parties involved in the conflict to pursue peaceful dialogue and uphold international humanitarian norms.

“Nigeria calls on all sides to cease hostilities, embrace dialogue, and protect civilian lives. The nation remains firmly committed to supporting peaceful conflict resolution and upholding global and regional peace and stability,” the statement concluded.
