..it gives me joy and pride, says the Celebrant
In marking the 84th birthday anniversary of the former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Adewunmi Abitoye, no fewer than 150 people benefited from free medical services at his hospital in Ijoka, Akure, on Saturday, 14th June 2024.
The event, organised by the children of the octogenarian, featured free consultations, tests, and treatments for all beneficiaries—both old and young.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Bolaji Abitoye-Oyedele, the first child of the celebrant, explained that the medical outreach was initiated purposely to honour him through a meaningful and impactful initiative. She added that it was also aimed at promoting good health through the early detection of common illnesses, and as a way to give back to the community in appreciation of their support for his hospital over the years.
“The medical outreach served as a worthy celebration of a life of kindness and service. I remain thankful to all my siblings who contributed to its success and pray for God’s continued blessings upon our father,” she said.

“He is a brilliant medical doctor with a heart full of care,” says Chief Benjamin Abitoye, the first son of the celebrant. He further described him as a walking blend of wisdom ,wit, and born leader.
Speaking from the diaspora, Dr. Toyin Abitoye, a US-based son of the celebrant, described his father as a living embodiment of generosity whose life’s motto exemplifies giving back to one’s community.
“Growing up, Dad was a well-known physician in Ondo State, and we, his children, believe the least we can do at this point in his life is to perpetuate this gesture of free healthcare in his immediate community.
“This is the third year, and we have collectively pledged to make this an annual event indefinitely.”
Another son of the celebrant, Dr. Somidotun Abitoye, who was part of the medical team, noted that the gesture was also a way of appreciating the patients of Abitoye’s hospital.

“Today, we are giving out several free tests and medications such as antimalarials, antibiotics, HIV tests, hepatitis screening, vital signs checks, blood pressure, and random blood sugar tests for everyone. We have mostly adults here, and we have four doctors on ground, including myself.”
Banke Abitoye, another child of the celebrant, highlighted their father’s early efforts in establishing the hospital, which she said were driven by purpose and divine calling rather than profit.
Also, Ms. Opeoluwa Abitoye praised his unwavering dedication to community service, describing him as a consistent giver whose philanthropic spirit continues to inspire everyone around him.
Responding to the initiative, Dr. Adewunmi Abitoye expressed joy over the unity and compassion displayed by his children during his lifetime.

According to him, he felt fulfilled seeing his children united for a cause aimed at providing succour to the less privileged, especially during a time when healthcare services are expensive.
“Every birthday of mine since I turned 80, they organise this type of outreach, and it keeps expanding every year.
“I am so grateful to them. I never dreamt it would be like this. They have organised themselves so well and cooperate with one another.
“They put up a lot of activities that help me. You’ll be surprised—they contribute money to buy drugs for me, especially these days when drugs are so costly. I am very impressed.
“That unity and togetherness give me joy and pride. When my peers and I gather, I boast that I have a family, and I am grateful to God,” he said with joy.
Celebrating the grace of longevity, he advised individuals to prioritise regular medical check-ups, noting that while they may not prevent untimely death, they significantly contribute to a longer lifespan.
“My advice to people is: please, check yourselves regularly. Don’t wait until you begin to feel pain or become disabled.
“Even though people still die, it is known that the lifespan of individuals is prolonged through proper care and attention to one’s health,” he added.
The beneficiaries expressed excitement and gratitude for the initiative, describing it as a means of attracting divine blessings.

Reacting, an elderly man, Mr. Aremu Lawani, commended the outreach and prayed for the organisers. He emphasised the need for other well-meaning Nigerians to embrace such initiatives for the benefit of the less privileged.
Another beneficiary, Prince Adebowale Ogunlade, described the gesture as a way of relieving the burden on government.
“This is fantastic and truly about giving back to society. If more Nigerians can key into this, it will ease the pressure on the government.
“If Dr. Abitoye can do this, and other doctors follow suit, it will make a great difference,” he said.
Madam Kate Patrick also appealed to the government to occasionally organise similar free medical services for the public.

The turnout, which exceeded expectations, was a clear testament to the strong demand for medical attention among Nigerians who are unable to access healthcare due to financial constraints.
