The Chairman of the Ondo State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities(PWDs), Princess Arise Folashade, has called on political party leaders to prioritize the inclusion of persons with disabilities as candidates in the forthcoming local government elections.
Princess Folashade emphasized that the voices, experiences, and perspectives of PWDs are crucial for shaping communities and governance, noting that they form a significant portion of the state’s population.
“In every democratic setting, elections serve as a platform to give a voice to all citizens, ensuring diverse perspectives are represented,” she said. “Despite the progress made in promoting inclusivity, PWDs still face barriers that hinder their active participation in electoral processes and as party candidates.”
She further stressed that the belief that PWDs are incapable of holding leadership or elective positions contradicts the principles of equity and fairness. She called for a shift in societal mindset and urged party leaders, the state working committee, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to comply with the Disability Rights Law.
Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, Princess Folashade stated, “The participation of PWDs in elections is not only a fundamental right but also essential for fostering a more inclusive and representative democracy.”
She called for proactive measures, including the nomination of PWDs as party candidates, providing them with full support, and ensuring accessibility. “Implementing these measures will facilitate the full integration of PWDs into the democratic system and decision-making processes,” she concluded.
