Ibadan, Nigeria – The Oyo State chapter of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) celebrated Pink October 2024 with a vibrant Fitness Day event on Saturday, October 5, 2024. The event, held at the BRECAN Centre in Ibadan, drew both members and non-members, emphasizing the importance of fitness in cancer prevention and overall well-being.

Participants began the day with invigorating fitness drills set to upbeat music, followed by a refreshing serving of fresh fruits, promoting the organization’s message of healthy living. The cool morning atmosphere and energetic exercise session brought together a community committed to raising awareness about breast cancer.

October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and BRECAN has consistently leveraged this period to create awareness, support survivors, engage in advocacy, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. This year’s fitness day was a highlight of their activities aimed at fostering community health and breast cancer prevention.

Speaking at the close of the event, BRECAN Founder and former First Lady of Ondo State, Her Excellency Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, praised the Oyo chapter for their initiative. “This is wonderful. You are the pace setter and you keeping coming up with excellent ideas,” she said.

Breast cancer remains a significant public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with high mortality rates due to late diagnosis, expensive treatments, and inadequate oncology facilities. BRECAN, through events like this, continues to lead the fight against breast cancer with the ultimate goal of reducing mortality rates and promoting early detection and prevention.
