The Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) was invited by the management and Students’ Union of Redeemers University to facilitate a cancer awareness session as part of a capacity-building initiative for student leaders and staff members.
The event, themed “Healthcare and Security as Important Aspects of Community Welfare,” aimed to enhance knowledge on critical health issues.
The BRECAN team, led by National President Amb. Tolu Taiwo, COO Mr. Promise Ihezie, and Admin and Programmes Officer Mrs. Amarachi Obiji, delivered a comprehensive presentation on breast, cervical, and prostate cancers.

Amb. Tolu Taiwo provided an informative overview of the three types of cancer, underscoring the importance of early detection and prevention.
Mr. Promise Ihezie introduced BRECAN’s mission and vision, emphasizing the need for ongoing cancer awareness and action in Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor of Redeemers University, Prof. S.O. Akindele, who welcomed the BRECAN team and guest speaker Dr. Chucks Umahi, highlighted the university’s commitment to research and innovation.
Prof. Akindele noted the institution’s pivotal role in combating Ebola and COVID-19 in Nigeria, mentioning that the first Ebola case in Nigeria was diagnosed in the university’s laboratory.
The event took place in the Senate Chambers and was attended by university management, staff, and student leaders.

The invitation from Redeemers University signifies growing recognition of BRECAN’s cancer awareness campaigns, as it marks the second university engagement within two months, following a similar event at the University of Ibadan’s Faculty of the Social Sciences.
BRECAN, has therefore, planned to continue its outreach efforts with upcoming projects targeting the Eleyele and Dugbe markets, aiming to extend cancer awareness campaigns to a broader audience.
