The national President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, has conveyed his heartfelt message to local government workers on this International Labour Day.
In his statement, he expressed gratitude on behalf of ALGON’s National Executive Council, Board of Trustees, management, staff, and his family, celebrating the unique skills, patriotism, and dedication of workers despite challenges faced in some LGAs.
Maifata acknowledged the resilience of ALGON’s 36 state chairmen and their FCT counterparts, urging them to uphold their duties despite external pressures.
He emphasized ALGON’s commitment to good governance, collaboration with state and federal authorities, and advocacy for effective local governance structures.
Regarding workers’ welfare, Maifata advocated for a living wage across Area Councils and LGAs, highlighting ongoing discussions with government and the National Assembly to address this issue.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the current revenue allocation formula, stressing the need for increased funding to meet the extensive responsibilities of local governments as outlined in the constitution.
Maifata praised the dedication of rural workers and called for continued support from the present administration, urging workers to persevere amid economic challenges.
ALGON aims to advance constitutional reforms to address the needs of rural workers and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level.
Maifata urged collaboration with NLC, TUC, and NULGE to strengthen the local government system through constitutional amendments and policy advocacy.
He highlighted the plight of non-elected officers overseeing local government affairs, emphasizing the importance of genuine administrative leadership to drive development and economic growth.
Maifata stressed the importance of recognizing and valuing the contributions of local government workers to national development, advocating for the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme at the local government level.
He underscored the vital role of state governments in supporting grassroots development initiatives, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and job creation.
Maifata emphasized the need to address challenges such as insecurity and infrastructure neglect to ensure the well-being of rural dwellers and civil servants.
In conclusion, Maifata reiterated ALGON’s commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of local government workers and called for collective efforts to address the systemic challenges facing the local government system in Nigeria.
