The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists joined Africa continent to celebrate the day of the African Child today by calling on all stakeholders to protect the rights of children in their domain.

The theme for this year celebration, which comes up every June 16th is “ACCESS TO A CHILD-FRIENDLY JUSTICE SYSTEM IN AFRICA”.

The African Child Day, was initiated by the Organization of African Union, in 1991 to honor those who participated in the Soweto uprising in 1976.

In a statement signed by NAWOJ Secretary, Patience Ibeh, the association’s Chairperson, Mrs. Doris Olumoko charged women to use the occasion of the day of the African child to campaign rigorously against child rape and molestation.

Olumoko congratulated African children on this day and encouraged them to cry out when undergoing maltreatment or molestation of any kind irrespective of the status of the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, it is the day two of the NAWOJ National virtual campaign against rape, as all members were directed to bombard the social media platforms with anti-rape statements to express displeasure to the recent spike in the ugly trend.
