Aderoboye emerges Ondo NUJ chairman

The immediate past Vice-chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ondo state council, Mr. Adetona Aderoboye has been elected as the new chairman.

He polled 115 votes to defeat his opponent, Mr. Anthony Adetoye of the state ministry of information chapel who polled 17 votes.

Other newly executive members are, Vice-chairman, Hakeem Gbadamosi of Tribune newspaper, General Secretary, Leke Adegbite of Radio Nigeria, Financial Secretary, Adeola Adekunle of Adaba FM.

Adekunle polled 116 votes to defeat Ajibola Oluwadare of the State information chapel who had 16 votes, while the Vice-chairman and the General Secretary were returned unopposed.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Mr Aderoboye assured that he would do all necessary things to uplift the union in the state, and thereby solicited the support of all members of the union.

He expressed gratitude to all members for the confidence reposed in him and other members of his team, promising not to let them down.

The Vice President of the union, Mr Cosmos Oni who supervised the election called on
Journalists in the state to uphold the ethics of journalism in the course of their duty.

He stressed the need for that media professionals to do everything possible to uphold the tenets of democracy.

Oni charged the new executive members to be proactive and engage in
activities that will promote the union and journalism profession.

The positions of Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Internal Auditor remains vacant as no one showed interest in the positions.

However, the new excos have been mandated by the national body of the union to ensure that election is conducted within one month to fill the vacant position.

It would be recalled that an industrial court of Justice sitting in Akure sometime in October 2018 declared the executives of the union, led by Mr James Sowole as illegal, and ordered that a fresh election be conducted within 30days of the judgment.

Mr. Tony Adetoye who was an aspirant in 2017, dragged the Sowole-led exco and the then electoral committee to court for being screened out unlawfully in the election which later returned Sowole as an unopposed Chairman in October 2017 which supposed to be the election year.

The election was however scheduled to hold on November 18th, 2018 as directed by the court but was disrupted.

Pandemonium broke out when Local government chapel of the union was invited for verification before voting, and the list of voters presented from the chapel was questioned, which led to serious fracas that disrupted the election.

After engaging in hours of rowdy session, the NUJECO declared the election paused till further notice which called for the intervention of the national body of the union.

After four months, the national body last week sent a notice for the conduct of the election, and the election was reported to have been peaceful.
