
Worried about the spate of ritual killings in Ikare Akoko, Akoko NorthEast Local Government area of Ondo State, traditional rulers and community leaders on Thursday came together to carry out traditional rites meant to stop the gruesome act and also to fish out the perpetrators.
The traditional priests and their disciples were joined by hundreds of residents as they marched round the town performing rites and offering sacrifices to the gods to fish out the ritual killers.
It was gathered that the septuagenarian, Medinat Ala, who was fondly called Iya Abbey was murdered by suspected ritualists, who clubbed her to death with a pestle in her room at Okeegbe in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed that a suspect, has been apprehended, while investigation is still on going .
He told The Hope Metro that the suspect identified as Moses Olaniyi, has been a co-tenant of the deceased for several years in their residence opposite Terere house, Okeegbe quarter, Ikare-Akoko.
An eyewitness narrated that the septugenarian, Medinat Ala, was a petty trader, who had her shop in front of her residence, E/97t Okeegbe street, Ikare.
She was said to be in the habit of coming out at odd hours to sell goods for whoever knocked on her door to buy things, after she had closed for the day.
Luck, however ran out on her that fateful night, as she met her death in the hands of suspected ritualists who reportedly removed her private parts and breasts and also carted away her blood after they have drained that in a container.
According to sources at the scene of the incident the 70-year-old woman might have opened the door to the supposed customers who later killed her.
It was further gathered that the four-year-old grandchild of the victim, named Dada, who was living with her, also fell victim, as his dreadlocks was shaved and taken away by the ritualists.
Medinat lifeless body was said to have been discovered by her neighbors who raised the alarm that attracted residents of the areas.
It was also learnt that the ritualists struck Medinat’s 75-year-old neighbour Abdul Karim Awawu, on the heard with a pestle.
Awawu was said to have heard some strange sounds coming from her room and decided to find out what was happening, when the ritualists attacked her.
Awawu, it was learnt, was taken to the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare where she was given first aid before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo for a better treatment because of the severity of her injury.
When our reporter visited the scene of the incident, the mutilated corpse of the old woman was still lying on the floor of her room.
The breasts, womb and and genitals of the deceased removed and carted away, made people believe she must have been killed for ritual purposes.
One of the deceased’s son, who did not want his name mentioned, told our reporter that he got a phone call in the early hours of Wednesday that his mother has been killed.
“We were called in the early hours of today that she had been murdered in cold blood, while the assailants removed vital parts of her body.”
In the same vein, Awawu’s first son, Mr. Karim A. Abdul, revealed that he was in his farm when message got to him that his mother had been killed.
“But on getting there, I discovered she was still breathing. So, we rushed her to the hospital.
He explained that the hospital had given the victim first aid treatment before advising that she should be taken to a higher medical institution for further and proper treatment because her injury was too severe.
Meanwhile other people living in the house including the landlord’s son, who is a commercial motorcyclist, were said to have denied hearing any sound or see any strange movement before the incident occurred
But they said they only discovered that the woman had been killed the following morning.
Medinat’s shocking murder is coming barely months after three female mad persons were killed in the same manner consecutively.
The remand of Mrs Medinat Ala, has since been deposited at the morgue of the state Specialist Hospital in Ikare-Akoko.
