The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a tragic fire outbreak that claimed the lives of two young children in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on March 18, 2026, at No. 1 Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area, reportedly led to the death of Queen Ohwo, aged six, and Everlyne Ohwo, aged four, both daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Ohwo Peter.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, police operatives promptly visited the scene, where necessary documentation and photographic evidence were taken. The remains of the victims were subsequently evacuated to a health centre in Ode-Aye.
The parents of the deceased were said to be in a state of shock and trauma when officers arrived at the scene.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by negligence during cooking activities.
However, the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Divisional Police Officer in Ode-Aye has been directed to secure the scene, obtain statements from witnesses, and work in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service to ascertain the origin and extent of the fire.
The Police Command expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution in handling fire and cooking appliances to prevent similar occurrences.
It also advised the public to adopt safety measures such as avoiding unattended cooking, keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, and ensuring children are not left alone around fire or cooking areas.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, while encouraging residents to remain vigilant and safety-conscious at all times.
