Heavy security presence was witnessed on Tuesday at the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, Oyo State, as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Operation Amotekun, took control of the premises of the Commodity Brokers and Exchange Centre (CBEX).
According to a report from The Sun Newspaper, Eyewitnesses reported a dramatic scene as uniformed officers from both security agencies arrived in convoys, cordoned off the area, and secured the facility. The development sparked concern and speculation among residents and business owners in the bustling commercial district, many of whom were caught off guard by the sudden operation.
Although the exact reason for the security takeover remains unclear at this time, sources suggest that the move may be linked to ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in the management and operations of the CBEX office. Some reports indicate that there may have been disputes over property ownership or internal governance issues, prompting authorities to step in to prevent possible unrest.
Officials from both the Nigeria Police and the Amotekun Corps have yet to release an official statement regarding the operation. However, a senior security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, hinted that the move was “a proactive step to maintain law and order and to prevent the situation from escalating.”
The CBEX office in Oke-Ado serves as a key hub for commodity brokers and traders in Oyo State and the wider South-West region. It facilitates transactions and coordination among agricultural producers, buyers, and government stakeholders. The sudden closure of the office could have ripple effects on trade activities, especially among smallholder farmers and local aggregators who rely on its services.
Community leaders and stakeholders have called for calm, urging all parties involved to pursue peaceful resolution through legal and administrative channels. They have also appealed to the government to issue a clear statement to dispel rumors and ease public anxiety.
As of press time, security personnel remained stationed at the facility, restricting access and monitoring movement in the vicinity. The situation is being closely watched, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
