The former First Lady of Ondo State, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has dedicated her academic milestone to her late husband and immediate past Governor of the State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, CON.
Addressing guests at a reception held to celebrate her Doctorate Convocation Ceremony, which took place earlier at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, she described him as a staunch supporter who consistently encouraged her to pursue a career in academia.
In her speech titled “Mission Accomplished: Better Late Than Never,” delivered at Maranatha Court, GRA, Owo, Anyanwu-Akeredolu reflected on her academic journey and her husband’s encouragement not to abandon her doctoral studies.

“I dedicate this PhD to Aketi, my love, Arakunrin mi, Mr. Talk n Do, the Amotekun Generalissimo, who always believed I belonged in academia and urged me to pursue a career within the university system.
“At every point when things didn’t work out as planned, Aketi would counsel me to finish ‘this PhD.’ He would joke that if I wasn’t careful, my granddaughter Jojo might get a PhD before me! I wish Aketi was here to witness this day when the mission has been accomplished. Though late, at last, it’s done!” she said.
Despite various responsibilities and distractions — from founding the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria after her encounter with cancer to contesting political offices such as representing Owerri Federal Constituency in 2007 and vying for the Senate in 2023 — Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu said she never considered learning a burden.

“It was a long journey, but I’m glad I reached my destination. At 71, some might think having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1977), a Master’s in Fisheries and Aquaculture from the University of the Philippines, Iloilo (1986), and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Ibadan (2022), I should stop stressing myself academically and enjoy the rest of my life.
“The truth is, I never saw the acquisition of knowledge as a stress. Consequently, I continued learning and expanding my horizons. It made me smarter, more knowledgeable in different fields, and, above all, more confident as a woman who operates on her own terms,” she stated.
Although her husband was not alive to witness the milestone, Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu expressed gratitude for his unwavering belief in her. “Though late, the mission has been accomplished,” she said emotionally.

The event also featured the unveiling of a book entitled “Compendium of Tributes” to commemorate her 70th birthday. It was a moment of celebration for her family, friends, and associates.
Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu’s research, which she described as innovative, focuses on increasing fish production to combat food insecurity in Nigeria. She expressed pride in its practical applications and potential to make a significant impact. “Without sounding immodest, my research can tackle the problem of food insecurity in the country,” she said confidently.
She appreciated everyone who contributed to the success of her research and acknowledged her late husband’s family and friends for their support. “Their support was invaluable,” she said, fondly naming individuals who played key roles in her journey.

“It is well-deserved, despite my irreparable loss of Aketi. Chief Olujinmi, Aketi’s partner and brother, you have always been there for me and my family. I remain grateful. Aketi’s professional and political associates here present, I appreciate your presence,” she added.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Akin Olujinmi SAN, a legal partner of her late husband, while unveiling the Compendium of Tributes, affirmed that attaining a Doctorate at 71 underscores her strength and belief in achieving her goals.

Reflecting on her marital journey with the late Governor, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice described her life as a testament to commitment and determination.

In his remarks, her husband’s younger brother, Prof. Wole Akeredolu, who coordinated the Honouree Toast, thanked God for her life, saying, “Your life is worth toasting to.”

The celebrant later conducted guests through the processes of her research project.
