..calls for stakeholders’ intervention on high cost of living in Akure
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, held its Congress on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka-Akure. The meeting, chaired by State Chairman Prince Leke Adegbite, was attended by members from various chapels across the state. The Congress discussed a broad range of issues, from the media industry to politics, economy, security, and members’ welfare.
The Congress expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage by the government. Members urged key stakeholders to ensure immediate payment to alleviate the severe economic hardships faced by public servants.
With the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election in Ondo State approaching, the Congress called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders to intensify media engagement for voter enlightenment and mobilization.
The Congress also urged political actors to maintain the current decorum in their campaigns to ensure a peaceful election.
The Congress noted the worsening economic situation caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has led to widespread protests and hardship. It called on the government to address the obstacles hindering local production and supply of petroleum products to reduce the high cost of living.
On Agricultural Investments, Ondo NUJ emphasized the need for government investment in agriculture. It urged the provision of tractors and essential farm inputs at subsidized rates to farmers, aiming to boost food production and address the soaring costs of food items.
The Congress used the medium to appeal to Traditional Rulers in Ondo State to engage market leaders, especially the “Iya-Olojas” (market women leaders), to stabilize food prices. It also called on the government to curb the excesses of traders to protect consumers.
Addressing flood Prevention, the Congress commended the Ondo State Government for its ongoing efforts to clear waterways across the state. However, it urged more focused efforts in areas identified as flood-prone to prevent future disasters.
The Congress concluded with a call for prompt actions on these issues to improve the overall welfare of the people in Ondo State.
