An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Ondo State Police Command was on Sunday killed by a hit-and-run driver.

The tragic incident occurred in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of the state, along the busy Benin-Akure highway.

The driver who was reportedly on high speed knocked down the yet-to-be-identified Assistant Superintendent of Police at a checkpoint.

According to sources, the deceased police officer had tried to stop the vehicle but the driver hit him and drove away without stopping.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, disclosed:

“The driver swerved and hit an ASP and the officer died immediately, and the unidentified driver fled the scene immediately the accident occurred.

“The driver, however, was pursued, and fortunately for us, he (driver) was arrested by the military men at Sobe in Edo State.”

The PPRO added that the body of the deceased police officer has been deposited in the morgue.
