In line with its mandate to tackle all forms of gender-based violence in the state, Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence (OSAA-GBV) has organized a two-day training programme for staff of the agency between Wednesday 25th- Thursday 26th May, 2022.
The event was declared open by Mrs. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, who was represented by Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Gender, Research & documentation, Mrs.Temitope Daniyan.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Bar. Mrs Joel- Ogundadegbe said the goal was to equip staff of the agency for effectiveness in the discharge of their duties.
Bar. Ogundadegbe who said the agency is a creation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) further noted that OSAA-GBV is on ground in the state to tackle all forms of violence ranging from domestic, emotional to sexual among others.
While also thanking the First Lady, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu who is the chairperson of OSAA-GBV in the state for being at the forefront and giving her supports towards making the project a reality, Bar. Ogundadegbe said the two- day programme will among others equip the staff on key areas of competence in line with their schedule of duties in helping to achieve agency’s goal of eliminating and reducing gender based violence in the state.
Giving her keynote address, the Special Adviser to Mr. Governor on Gender, Hon. Mrs. Olamide Falana while commending the agency for initiating the programme said it is apt and will go a long way in equipping the staff on expected areas of competence.
In a lecture titled “Gender Based Violence in Nigeria: Way Forward”, Rita Ilavbare Esq., the Centre Manager of Ekiti Sexual assault Referral Centre (Moremi Clinic) while exploring the concept of GBV as well as forms of GBV noted that not all forms of violence are physical as some abuses take psychological form.
She also used the opportunity to urge interveners to be conscious of prevention and response to GBV cases as it comes with ethical and legal concerns.
The event also featured a presentation by Barr. Catherine Ogunjebi on Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law 2021; Implementation and Strategies. Other speakers include presentation on Medical Response to Gender Based Violence Cases by Dr. Elohor Orji, Need for Effective Counselling in the Fight Against Gender Based Violence by Mrs Ademuyiwa and Professionalism and Effective Service Delivery in OSAA-GBV by the PS, Estab.as well as The Role of Law Enforcement Agency in the fight against GBV by Mrs Ayodele Caroline Bolanle from NSCDC among others.
