Henry Olubunmi, a gospel artiste cum Evangelist, has assessed the recent style adopted by some self-proclaimed gospel singers who introduce hip hop contents to their songs, describing the development as unacceptable.
He reacted to the current adaptation of slangs like ‘Gbebody e’, a hip hop lyrics while singing praises.
According to him, the basis for producing a gospel song must be to inspire and win souls for the kingdom of God, rather than causing the listeners to be carried away with worldly musical attractions.
He stressed the need for every intended gospel song to glorify God, saying, “if their music doesn’t glorify God, then, it is not a gospel music, it must attract people to God”.
Evangelist Henry Olubunmi, the composer of the trending “Morning Laughter” song, said, although he was divinely inspired to sing, his passion for it started since childhood days when residing with his aunt who used to sell musical records.
He professed that he was fully into singing professionally for the past six years and had produced an album titled “Glory”, which contains nine tracks.
Olubunmi, a practising Civil Engineer, affirmed that he didn’t just delved into music for profit-making purpose, but was mandated by God, describing it as good avenue to proclaim the gospel.
“It started when I was in school, I used to do jingles, and I write jingles during my University days. After my graduation, I went to music school; the school was an opportunity to meet people because there was a studio there.
“But in 2018 I released a single track tittled “OGO“, and my intention then was not to release an album; but after the release of the single, people asked for the album, I discussed this with someone who happened to be my manager.
“So in 2019, we were able to release an album titled “Glory”, with nine tracks.
“I am purely a vocalist and I play a little bit of the guitar, I don’t play it professionally, but I do play it to compose my songs.
“I am also a preacher of the gospel; I am a coordinator of a non-denominational fellowship called Neighbourhood Christian fellowship located in Akure”, he said.
Olubunmi avowed his determination to ensure that he produces songs that would impact lives.
He mentioned Don Moen as his role model, saying his songs do inspire him, noting that gospel music industry in Nigeria performs below international standard as promoters don’t recognise the young artistes who actually possess the potential.
He therefore, urged the upcoming artistes
to keep trying and hoping, not to allow Nigeria circumstances to hinder them from utilising their God-given talent.
